چکیده

Abstract The local Casimir energy density and the global Casimir energy for a massless scalar field associated with a λδ-function potential in a 3+1 dimensional circular cylindrical geometry are considered. The global energy is examined for both weak and strong coupling, the latter being the well-studied Dirichlet cylinder case. For weak-coupling, through O(λ2), the total energy is shown to vanish by both analytic and numerical arguments, based both on Green’s-function and zeta-function techniques. Divergences occurring in the calculation are shown to be absorbable by renormalization of physical parameters of the model. The global energy may be obtained by integrating the local energy density only when the latter is supplemented by an energy term residing precisely on the surface of the cylinder. The latter is identified as the integrated local energy density of the cylindrical shell when the latter is physically expanded to have finite thickness. Inside and outside the δ-function shell, the local energy density diverges as the surface of the shell is approached; the divergence is weakest when the conformal stress tensor is used to define the energy density. A real global divergence first occurs in O(λ3), as anticipated, but the proof is supplied here for the first time; this divergence is entirely associated with the surface energy, and does not reflect divergences in the local energy density as the surface is approached.

Local Casimir Energies for a Thin Spherical Shell

Abstract The local Casimir energy density for a massless scalar field associated with step-function potentials in a 3 + 1 dimensional spherical geometry is considered. The potential is chosen to be zero except in a shell of thickness δ, where it has height h, with the constraint hδ = 1. In the limit of zero thickness, an ideal δ-function shell is recovered. The behavior of the energy density as...

Multiple Scattering Methods in Casimir Calculations

Multiple scattering formulations have been recently rediscovered as a method of studying the quantum vacuum or Casimir interactions between distinct bodies. The methods are hardly new, but increased computing power and advances in understanding allow us to extract information efficiently. Here we review the method in the simple context of δ-function potentials, so-called semitransparent bodies....

Casimir Energies in a Green ’ s Function Approach

The effects of quantum fluctuations in fields confined by background configurations may be simply and transparently computed using the Green's function approach pioneered by Schwinger. Not only can total energies and surface forces be computed in this way, but local energy densities, and in general, all components of the vacuum expectation value of the energy-momentum tensor may be calculated. ...

Axial buckling analysis of an isotropic cylindrical shell using the meshless local Petrov-Galerkin method

In this paper the meshless local Petrov-Galerkin (MLPG) method is implemented to study the buckling of isotropic cylindrical shells under axial load. Displacement field equations, based on Donnell and first order shear deformation theory, are taken into consideration. The set of governing equations of motion are numerically solved by the MLPG method in which according to a semi-inverse method, ...

Exact Casimir Interaction Between Semitransparent Spheres and Cylinders

A multiple scattering formulation is used to calculate the force, arising from fluctuating scalar fields, between distinct bodies described by δ-function potentials, so-called semitransparent bodies. (In the limit of strong coupling, a semitransparent boundary becomes a Dirichlet one.) We obtain expressions for the Casimir energies between disjoint parallel semitransparent cylinders and between...
